Warushavithana Tharanga

Upul Tharanga has a good record when it comes to ICC Cricket World Cups. The opening batsmen was part of the 2007 and 2011 teams which finished runners-up at the tournament but despite the disappointment of missing cricket’s biggest prize, Tharanga produced good performances on both occasions. Tharanga made his one-day international debut in mid-2005 just months after his family home was washed away in the Asian tsunami. The following year was a standout for Tharanga and resulted in his selection in the 2007 World Cup squad. He finished the tournament with three fifties to his name, including 73 in the semi-final against New Zealand.   He was dropped from the ODI team later that year but returned to form and was again part of the World Cup squad in 2011. Tharanga has 14 ODI centuries to go along with three Test hundreds.

He has been involved in seven 200-plus opening partnerships, the second player to achieve the feat behind Ricky Ponting.
